Solidarity with LGBTQ+ of Uganda

On the 21st of March 2023 we were saddened to hear of the 2023 Anti Homosexuality Bill being passed in Uganda. This bill makes it illegal for individuals within the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda to openly express their sexuality which could result in long prison sentences and even death for those that do.

The bill not only targets lesbians, gays, bisexual individuals within the community, it also can be applied towards anyone who may “attempt” LGBTQ acts or practices targeting those who may be discovering their sexuality.

It is also means that promoting LGBTQ+ agendas can also lead to punishment of jail too. This means that anyone who speaks up against the bill who is in Uganda can be prosecuted including allies as well as healthcare providers and more.

Norwich Pride stands in solidarity with all affected by this new bill passed in Uganda. And we would like to offer support where we can to help LGBTQ+ community members and allies in Uganda as well as those who may be affected by it within our community here within the UK.

“Norwich Pride is both saddened and horrified to hear of the passing of a law in Uganda that makes it a crime to identify as gay, and imposes tough sentences that may include the death penalty. Same sex relations in Uganda were already illegal, but now Uganda joins over 60 other countries that can impose the death penalty. This is partly due to the legacy of commonwealth laws and will reverse gains in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda in opposing this law.” Julie Bremner trustee and Treasurer for Norwich Pride.

“The bill is barbaric and discriminatory. It is a tragic day in Uganda’s history – all but two of the 389 legislators voted for the bill. Their actions have been clouded by hate. It has setback LGBT+ rights in Africa. We are thinking of LGBT+ people and their allies in Uganda, in our city, in our fight for freedom. Our day will com.” Nick O’Brien trustee of Norwich Pride.

We at Norwich Pride don’t stand by this hate legislation and are deeply saddened how discriminatory and genocidal rhetoric targeting the LGBTQ+ community, it is already having an extreme negative effect on many.
